Dixie Cup Coveralls
$150.00
Cotton
Size 44
Pennsylvania, USA
A near-perfect pair of vintage 1930s coveralls made by A. Rifkin & Co of Wilkes-Barre, PA for the Dixie Cup factory down the road in Easton, PA. Deep indigo blue with beautiful chain-stitched "Dixies" on the back and Dixie Cup on the front.
In 1891, Abraham Rifkin and his family fled religious persecution in Czarist Russia and ended up in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After little luck living off the land, Abraham and his in-laws started making work clothing for local farmers from heavy-duty cotton denim. Within the year, they had moved to the city of Wilkes-Barre, home of a thriving coal-mining industry, to make work clothing for miners who appreciated the quality of their work. Eleven years later, they had built the business enough to buy a building. In 1921-22, Abraham's sons received a patent for their Union Garment called a "cover-all" that was designed to be easily taken on and off. A new embroidery machine would allow the brothers to customize their Rifkin-Alls with the name or a design for the companies that bought coveralls. In effect, turning their basic Rifkin-Alls into a uniform for the workers.
