Japanese paper balloons, kamifusen, are common in Japan and elsewhere in the world but we had never before come across square ones. This style comes from the Toyama region of Japan, which for 100’s of years has been known for its pharmaceutical industry. The square form originated from the paper sheets used for packaging medicines. The balloons were given as gifts to children from a supplier and would have been covered with promotional material. Ours are handmade and the patterns are traditional Japanese paper patterns.
