Pipes and German thinking go hand-in-hand, was it Freud or Jung? I recall Freud smoked, but was it a cigar? Smoking is a bad thing, but at least this is not a cigarette! Imagine that! Cigarette bubble blower - weird! The pipe is a bit more pseudo-academic I'd say, and a bubble pipe, well that just bursts all of the clichés. Bubble liquid goes in the belly of the pipe - dip the wand, lift & blow! Family owned Dr. Rolf Hein GmbH & Co. has been the manufacturer of PUSTEFIX bubble toys since 1948 and they take pride in the quality of their bubble soap. I understand why. We love it! The Danish Dish Brush was presented to us by a friend who spends summers in the south of Sweden. Year after year, while on holiday, her family has developed a tradition of making a pilgrimage to Denmark to purchase one brush for every adult in the family. The brush is “that good”. Our pal not only clued us in, but she gave us one, and after we tried it for a length of time, we decided, it passes the test, it is, THAT good. In our home the brush lasts for 2 - 3 years. Sometimes certain materials, melted cheese, bread dough, etc., get stuck in the bristles. If that is the case, when your brush needs cleaning, dip the bristles into a pot of boiling water and hold it there for a couple of minutes, it should clear out. ADDED BONUS! The horsehair holds soap really well, so now I use one-third of the soap I did with plastic brushes, plus I don’t get sprayed with soapy water by those hard, plastic bristles any longer. Impulsive, scrap, sincere, all those things we love at KIOSK. Time passes, she has solved it, the object is made one by one with the thumb while turning, taking away from the mass, it makes sense as the form is based on a traditional wood turned candlestick. I ask if she would make us a bunch and she does, everyone of them unique and different. She loves repetition, the feel of the "grogged" clay, which means it has a super rough texture. The glaze has a lot of iron in it, giving the clay an almost metallic sheen, so that when you look at the object for the first time you wonder, is it metal or clay? Anna made a point to me that it should be paired with a tapered candle. And that the candlestick is better coated in built-up wax as the wax becomes a layer on the piece, another part of history, documentation of a night or a meal. The holes and thus colander originated from what was a bowl because her first studio charged by the weight of the finished item; having holes made the bowls about 40-50% lighter. He's an incredibly sympatico person with so many good designs popping out of him. This one is simple yet ingenious and also exactly how I want my coat hooks to look like, if only I had the time to bend! Incredibly, it fits on any wall wider than 3.75 inches - please measure before getting and putting. Ask your grandma's elbow. If it's creaky, the storms are rolling in. Ask the wind. Wet your finger and stick it in the air. If those clouds are blowing your way, get your slicker out. Perhaps your phone is smart, and can provide you with the daily forecast. But the thing is, your grandma's elbow is certainly just old. And let's be honest, clouds don't always rain. And you shouldn't really be staring at your phone for all that long. What you should really do is put this stick on the side of the house, out on the porch, and look at it. If it's up, the weather is going to be fine. If it's down, be a good kid and get your jacket, gloves, and hat (if you're going out). Or stay inside and make some soup. When you have sold out of hope (tickets) the seller breaks open the sealed metal ring and puts the remaining paper stubs in a container for mixing and selecting. We met at KIOSK in 2008, talking and immediately laughing, we always laugh together. He was a shopper with much to say about objects and I was a seller with much to say about objects and we hit it off. Soon, he was showing of a part of his plastic bag collection at KIOSK. (Later, he made a book of them which I hope will be produced.) He is completely himself and he has a wonderful eye. Beyond objects he also is an artist, with a practice I envy. When he comes to visit us in France he goes into the studio and just works and works. We meet for meals and the occasional outing, most particularly to vide greniers. He works, while I'm procrastinating trying to work, and every day he comes with something new. It's friends like this we all can use. He naturally denies he spends too much time in the studio and it's true sometimes he does cook. Life's desires should always take precedence and he shows me how. Through him I have come to understand better, and without guilt, that the life of a sincere artist is equal hard work with the intense, burning, constant, completely never-ending desire to create.

Getting him to show his work is not always so easy. I know Jason's abstracts but I only recently discovered he's been steadily painting sheep. The relationship began a few years ago when he went on his annual residency to Norway with paper in hand and an aim to only work with materials and colors produced from plants on the island. He arrived to find 42 sheep in residence eating the plants into oblivion. In sharing the vegetation with the animals he found a bond and a connection was built. The connection turned into portraits; he painted sheep in the fields; he paints them in Red Hook from photos, his relationship with sheep continues to this day. He says their eyes penetrate your soul and that the sheep he paints walk off the pages. It is a bond of silent and intense exchange and the result, a product of everything an artist puts into their work. There is a well in them and it is clear.

Cast Iron, 6.8 oz
5/8" x 2 1/8" x 2 1/8"
A series of 5, each is numbered and comes in a raw silk pouch

Kendall is a down to earth, no fuss, let's do it, person; a solid friend. It's always a question of what came first, what came second, life slides into place. As for the candles I believe it's a little bit of both. The story goes she was wanting to try her hand at craft, came across a tutorial of Martha Stewart making candles using a gourd, and looking at all the broken and discarded toys around the house and wanting to do something with them to keep them out of the landfill, grabbed the closest thing of the same form, Garamon, a kaiju from Japanese films, and proceeded to melt and pour. Ten years on, she continues. Even with such time passing one thing continues to confuse her, people don't burn her candles. She figures it's because they somehow relate to them. But she is clear, burn the thing, set an intention, see it transform, let it go and buy another.
